World Tiger Day

Period: July 30, 2023 | Place: Oxford Bookstore, Kolkata
World Tiger Day was commemorated on July 30, 2023 at Oxford Bookstore, Kolkata; with Talks by Dr Atanu Kr Raha, Retired IFS & PCCF of West Bengal and by Sri Sabyasachi Chakraborty, eminent film personality & Wilf Life Activist were followed by a Book Launch. The Book was written by Suddhasattwa Das, a young tiger-lover, was published both in Bengali and English. Earlier Tublu Chatterjee, veteran tiger photographer, was felicitated for his remarkable contribution towards tiger tourism and conservation.

SAHAYOG

Date: June 03, 2023 | Place: Ashutosh Mookerjee Memorial Institute, Kolkata
A Symposium on Sustainable Ecology -'SAHAYOG' - has been organized at Ashutosh Mookerjee Memorial Institute, Kolkata on June 03, 2023, on the occasion of World Environment Day. Speakers were: Dr. Ashok Kumar Lahiri, Economist; Mr. Biswajit Mukherjee, Environment Law Activist; Mr. Soumyadeep Datta of Nature's Beckon, Northeast India ; Mr. Bimal Debnath, Retd. DFO, North Bengal; Mr. Jyotirindranarayan Lahiri, Editor, Sudhu Sundarban Charcha.

Nature Camp

Period: 17-19 March, 2023 | Place: Manas National Park
A 3 days' Nature Camp was held at Manas National Park, BTC Assam from 17th March to 19th March 2023. The camp was organized by NESTs, Kolkata in collaboration with Nature’s Beckon, Assam. Activities include nature walk & bird watching along the border of National Park and two gypsy safaris to Bansbari & Bhuyanpara Range. The camp also included sessions on conservation of biodiversity and protection of forests. One major objective of visit to this Tiger Reserve and World Heritage Site is to experience how successfully Govt of Assam with the non-govt activists and forest dwellers are working in tandem towards the conservation of the forests. There were also interactive sessions on responsible eco-tourism and how the nature lovers can play roles to save the forests. The participants also interacted with the local Bodo people and got the opportunity to purchase their traditional attires and hand woven fabrics. Lastly there was a campfire where participants shared their personal experiences they were taking back with them.

Dooars Literary Fest

Promotion of sustainable eco-tourism in a literary way
Period: January 2020 & May 2022 | Place: Jalpaiguri and Siliguri
Poets, Writers & Painters from different part of West Bengal and neighboring Assam took part in the interactive session amidst open nature of Terai and Dooars.

Shalmoli

Towards a model Eco-tourism village
Period: Initiated in 2019 | Place: Jaldapara, Alipurduar
A tributary of Torsa, Sishamara flows through Jaldapara National Park. Initiatives on eco-tourism have started in the last few years on the banks of Sishmara. The objective of the project was to build awareness among the villagers and unemployed youth. For securing the culture of the area, local folk music and dance was promoted. Training was also provided to the locals on handicraft and support provided to them in health and education.

Students’ Symposium

Awareness and fascination of Nature and Wildlife among the School Students
Period: 2018 | Place: Jalpaiguri
Another initiative of NESTS for the young generation of Dooars was a symposium on wildlife conservation to celebrate Wildlife Week at Jalpaiguri Zilla School. Eminent Activists took part in the seminar and direct interaction with the students was held with an encouraging response.

Symposium on Tea and Tourism

Period: 2017 | Place: Jalpaiguri
As tea and tourism plays the most significant role in the economy of Dooars, a symposium was organized by NESTS on the Tea & Tourism in Duars. Speakers were Mr D P Roy (former MP & MLA); Mr Mihir Goswami (MLA & Chairman NBSTC), Kishan Kalyani (Planter), Mr Bijay Gopal Chakaraborty (General Secy, All India Small Tea Growers Association) & Pradosh Ranjan Saha (Secretary, NESTS and Editor, Rong Route).

Addaghar

A community building exercise as a part of awareness campaign on Natural and Wildlife conservation
Period: 2016-19 | Place: Jalpaiguri
Addaghar was a community building project in Jalpaiguri to cultivate local art, culture and promote conservation of environment and the native people. A Women’s club named “Srimati Duars” was formed to tap into the talents of artists of Dooars by organizing programmes. Mobile Photography contest & exhibition was also initiated for increasing interest of the environment. Other initiatives like literary interactions, Workshop on handicraft & folk art, health camps for children etc., was also carried out.
